Why we start over

Another missed deadline. I’m sorry. Today I wanted to discuss why I was so attracted to the Rogue-like style of gameplay, through the lens of a card

Death is one of the more striking cards in the Major Arcana. People think they know what Death means (Death, of course) but it’s not that. It’s Change, and resistance to it. Everything has an ending, that’s just a fact of life. It’s your resistance to it, whether you accept it, that causes trauma.

I love Rogue-likes because you can just start over. Your actions have consequences until they don’t. Sure you can get upgrades that change the run, get a good spin of the wheel that makes it easier, but it will always start from neutrality, more or less. But that’s the fun of it, isn’t it? You start from nothing, but you don’t. You’ve learned something new. This is how you bet XYZ boss, this is the item comp that works best, etc.

Death, the card, always means an end. How you react to that end is what is important
